Barolo 'Arborina' Elio Altare 2013

Elio Altare, father of the famous Barolo Arborina, is one of the main protagonists of the Piemontese wine innovation trend, which in the '80s brought a breath of fresh air in the Langhe, in the agriculture and production fields, with key influences from France and the New World, able to change the perception of Barolo itself. While building on the experience gained from his grandfather Giuseppe, founder of the family farm in La Morra, Elio Altare decided to take dramatic choices in the very way of conceiving the wine produced by him after a revealing trip to Burgundy, at the end of the '70s. Altare decided immediately to rationalize the production in the vineyard, bringing the old vines to low yields at lower densities per hectare; in the cellar, the old traditional barrels were replaced by French barriques, while the new rotary fermentors allowed to shorten the time of maceration on the skins. From this new philosophy, combined with the cult of the family vineyards because of their status as unique crus, with unmatched conditions, began a new chapter for Barolo, leading the way for generations of producers who would put together this vision. Barolo Vigna Arborina is the paradigmatic summary of Altare's thinking: produced in a limited number of bottles, it stands out for a very elegant flavor profile and a velvety tannic structure, given by the long aging in oak barrels from Allier, which guarantees a complex drinkability since the early years of life.
